Abstract
For a long time, glib neoliberal arguments about the impossibility of maintaining social democratic policies in the globalization era have been widely accepted. However, recently, comparative studies have provided evidence that despite undeniable problems posed by economic internationalization, the social democratic welfare state and its production regime have proved to be highly resilient. Moreover, the class and gender egalitarian policies characteristic of the social democratic welfare state have made an important contribution to human capital development and female labor participation without sacrificing fertility rate. This in turn facilitates the integration of entire labor force into productive activities that are competitive in high quality goods markets, and produces a strong tax base, which is sine qua non for the maintenance of generous welfare states.
