대학생들의 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동 인식에 영향을 미치는 요인

이 연구에서는 교내 범죄예방활동의 일환으로서 실시되고 있는 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동의 필요성과 제도의 발전에 대해 논의하고자 캠퍼스 폴리스 제도를 시행 중인 대학과 아직 시행하지 않는 대학 내 재학생들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동에 대한 인식태도를 살펴 본 결과, 제도의 실시여부와 무관하게 두 집단 모두 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동이 필요하다고 인식하고 있었다. 특히 성범죄와 폭력범죄 등 대인범죄와 교내 범죄피해의 두려움을 감소시킨다는 측면에서 제도의 범죄 예방 효과를 기대하는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 대학생들의 교내범죄피해에 대한 두려움이 높을수록 그리고 교내에서의 간접적인 범죄피해 경험이 많을수록 캠퍼스폴리스 활동의 필요성을 더욱 높게 체감하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해, 현재 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동에 대한 학생들의 만족도 역시 높을 것으로 기대되었으며, 일정부분 교내의 잠재적인 범죄발생을 억제시키고, 범죄피해의 두려움을 완화시키는 등 교내 범죄예방에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구는 제도를 시행하고 있는 집단과 아직 시행 전인 집단을 구분지어 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동과 교내 범죄피해의 두려움에 대한 인식을 비교 고찰해 본 점에서 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 제도시행 여부에 따른 모집단을 각 두 곳만으로 선정했기 때문에 연구의 결과를 일반화하기에는 한계가 있다. 또한 시행 전과 시행 후의 교내 범죄피해 두려움의 변화를 파악할 수 없기 때문에 제도의 효과성을 정확히 판단하는데 한계가 있다. 따라서 후속연구에서는 캠퍼스 폴리스 활동 시행 전과 후에 따라 학생들의 교내 범죄피해의 두려움과 그에 대한 인식 변화를 비교분석한다면 제도의 효과성을 보다 면밀히 파악할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
he current research surveyed current students to assess the needs and the policy improvements for campus policing in regards to campus crime prevention. First, after inspecting whether students acknowledged campus policing, despite the actual activity of campus policing, all students acknowledged that campus policing was a necessity. Especially, we expect campus policing policies to reduce the fear of crime in terms of sexual victimization and general victimization. Specifically, the more students experienced indirect victimization within the vicinity of the campus and the more fear of crime they perceive, students felt the need for campus policing. Collectively, we expect high satisfaction among the students in regards to campus policing. Hence, campus policing may have positive effect on deterring crime and reducing the fear of crime of among the students which may work as method of crime prevention. This research emphasizes the importance between the differences of campuses with campus policing versus campuses without campus policing to compare and contrast the awareness of fear of crime within the campus. However, with only two colleges as our research setting, we assume limitations for generalization. Additionally, it is limited to assess the level of fear of crime in terms of before and after the implementation of campus policing. Thus, the current study may be limited to assess accurately, the effectiveness of campus policing. For that reason, research that follows shall distinguish the effects of campus policing by investigating before and after to assess the effectiveness of campus policing.
