Abstract
This study divides cybercrime into three types and examines their causes and countermeasures across three types of cybercrime. This study tests the interaction effect between causal and countermeasure factors for an integrated approach to address how countermeasure factors can buffer the effect of causal factors and how there are differences across three types of cybercrime; contents, property, and new type of crime. This study uses low self-control, GPA score, association with delinquent peers, and the perceived profit from cybercrime as causal factors and the perceived certainty of punishment, the blocked opportunity and cyber ethics as countermeasure variables. Using data from college students in Seoul area, results show that causal factors are different across three types of cybercrime; low self-control is significant in contents crime, association with delinquent peers is important in property crime, and GPA score is highly significant in new type of crime. It is found that there are significant interaction effects that is different across three types of cybercrime. It is shown that the effect of low self-control is buffered by cyber ethics in contents crime, but the effect of perceived profit the perceived is buffered by certainty of punishment in property crime. It is also found that the effect of GPA is buffered by the blocked opportunity.
