Abstract
Recently, awareness of the risks posed by foreign countries using social media for influence operations has been increasing. These influence operations are referred to by various terms such as cognitive warfare, foreign information manipulation, and foreign malign information threats, but they generally all involve attempts to manipulate public perception through disinformation or information distortion. Such influence operations are now considered serious national security threats on the level of cognitive warfare, surpassing the mere dimensions of propaganda or influence projection. The threat of influence operations is particularly serious as they blur the traditional distinctions between war and peace, presenting significant national security challenges through malicious information manipulation from foreign states, even during peacetime, targeting civilians. Social media has become a major tool for conducting these influence operations, underscoring the need for understanding and countering these threats. North Korea, a major threat to South Korea, also conducts influence operations, with social media being one of the primary means used. Recently, North Korea has shifted from traditional external psychological warfare methods to utilizing social media platforms like YouTube to subtly influence the perceptions, thoughts, and judgments of audiences in South Korea and abroad, as well as to shape public discourse. This can be seen as an evolution of North Korea's external influence operations in response to contemporary information environments and trends. This study focuses on examining the new developments in North Korea's external influence operations and assessing their risks. It analyzes videos from the YouTube channel "New DPRK" which introduces North Korea, and evaluates their influence on foreign audiences. To achieve this, a qualitative analysis based on the narrative transportation theory was conducted.
