Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine a distribution of crime and changes at the administrative level in Gyeonggi-do. We use a safe map provided by the Ministry of Public Administration and security, including total crime, homicide, burglary, robbery, violence, arson, drug, gambling, sexual violence, and abduction. For analysis, the QGIS program was used to visualize changes in crime grade and to confirm significant clusters through global spatial autocorrelation analysis. Furthermore, the distribution of hot spots and cold spots for crime occurrence grades and their changes was examined by applying Getis-Old G* technique, which is a local spatial autocorrelation analysis. As a result of the analysis, many types of crime grades have relatively decreased or did not change compared to before the pandemic. This is consistent with the result of previous studies that the opportunity for face-to-face contact between individuals and the opportunity to concentrate in a specific area has decreased due to health policies such as social distancing. On the other hand, the grades of robbery and violence has risen. In the case of robbery, it was examined from the perspective of rational choice theory, and in the case of violence, it was considered, focusing on the possibility that social confusion and anxiety caused by the spread of COVID-19 were expressed in violent crime. Based on the results of this study, the policy suggestions and the limitations of this study were discussed.
