Abstract

This article presents an explanatory analysis of the spatial patterns of violent crime(Murder, Rape, Assault, Larceny, Robbery) in Seoul Metropolitan Area(City of Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon). It also investigates spatial autocorrelation of violent crime using global and local moran’s I. The analysis draws on the urban crime statistics of National Police Agency from 2005 to 2011. Spatial pattern of urban crime in South Korea has rarely been studied using panel data. Hot spot analysis helps rapidly identify high crime areas, types of crime being committed. The finding from spatial autocorrelation analysis shows significant spatial autocorrelation in all types of violent crime, suggesting that violent crime in Seoul Metropolitan Area are not randomly distributed. Rape and assault specifically recorded significant spatial autocorrelation. Moreover, Local Moran’s I analysis indicates that there are statistically significant geographical clusters of high and low crime densities in Seoul Metropolitan Area. The coldspots include Namyangju-si, Gwacheon-si, Goyang-si Deogyang-gu in Gyeonggi province. Most parts of the city of Seoul identify rape crime hot spots. The findings suggest that policy makers can prevent violent crime to allocate more police resources effectively to the focused area. The lack of data on crime, however, has been an issue in the study of hot spot policing. Crime information achieved from the time-varying spatial pattern of crime helps policy makers map out the crime prevention strategies, such as staffing and patrolling. Furthermore, researchers should consider spatial patterns in crime regression modeling because OLS regression results could lead to biased and inconsistent estimates of important variables.
