Abstract
The relationship between economic development and the rise and fall of democracy has been a classical and core topic in the studies of modern comparative politics, and scholars from various schools and intellectual traditions have provided ample supply of research outputs on this topic. Modernization theory in the 1950s and 1960s, dependency theory and its variations in the1970s and 1980s, neo-Weberians in the late 1980s, and the revival of the modernization school in the 1990s were the major intellectualsub-communities within comparative politics. But researches produced remarkably different results from one group to another, and yet the relationship between economic development and democracy is left far behind the scholarly consensus in this field. This paper will try statistical tests of both the linear thesis of the modernization thesis and an "N" or a "cubic curve" thesis on the relationship between economic development and democracy using time-series and pooled data for the 29 countries in East Asia and Latin America for the period from 1972 to 1992.
