Abstract
Anti-American sentiments among Korean public reached the highest point in December 2002 when massive political rallies were staged to blame USFK for the death of two teenage girls and to demand a revision of “unequal” provisions of SOFA. There have been increasing concerns that escalated anti-American public opinion may undermine the legitimacy of Korea-U.S. alliance, which has been a main security framework to deter threats from North Korea during the last half century, This paper aims to examine the scope and nature of anti-american public opinion by analyzing the survey data collected in December 2002 and June 2003. The major findings of survey data analysis are twofold. First, while escalated anti-american sentiments indicated Korean public's strong demand for the improvement of unequal aspect of Korea-U.S. relations, the majority of Korean public maintained positive appraisal of Korea-U.S. alliance as a deterrence to the North Korean threats. Second, the polarization of public opinion in the realm of security issues, especially by age groups, can be a serious threat to Korea-U.S. alliance. Given the serious security crisis pending in Korean peninsula, South Korea and the United States need to make cooperative efforts to alleviate anti-American sentiments among Korean public. Prolonged anti-American public opinion is harmful to security partnership of two allies.
