정치사상사에서 헤겔과 홉스는 인간의 정치적 삶에 대한 고찰과 이해에 있어 매우 뚜렷한 대조를 보여주고 있음에도 불구하고, 인간이 그 안에서 편안함을 느끼며 살아갈 수 있는 가치 있는 사회적 상호작용의 세계는 다름 아닌 인간 자신의 창조적, 구성적 능력으로부터 비롯된 다는 점을 함께 인정하고 있다. 요컨대 양자는 자아가 세계 속에서 자신의 본질을 규정하는 주체가 되며 모든 정치적 권위는 이러한 자아의 창조적 능력으로부터 비롯된다는 공통된 견해를 갖고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 홉스와 헤겔 양자가 공유하는, “스스로 규정하는” 주체로서 근대적 자아 개념의 내용과 의미를 살펴보고 이어서 양자의 본질적인 차이와 그 의미를 비판적으로 검토해 보고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 테일러(Charles Taylor)가 『자아의 원천: 근대적 정체성의 형성』에서 근대적 정체성의 복합성과 풍부함이라고 언급한 것에 대한 정치학적으로 보다 의미 있는 설명을 제시하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Hobbes and Hegel are political theorists whose approaches to the philosophical understanding of political life are in significant ways distinct from one another. Nonetheless Hobbes and Hegel are at one insofar as they recognize that the world of values and social interaction in which human beings can be at home is a world that depends crucially upon the inventive, constructive powers of human beings. They share an understanding of the world in which the self is seen as above all a self-defining subject and in which political authority derives from the capacities of human beings. This article points up what is central to their common notion of a self-defining subject as a modern self, and what is different in their two versions. This focus also illustrates what Taylor, in his Sources of the Self: The Making of the Modern Identity, has referred to as the “full complexity and richness of the modern identity.”
