Abstract
The theoretical purpose of this essay is to examine that the relevance of constructivist analysis of East Asian cooperation is limited to the process of the formation of East Asian regionalism and that the understanding of the deepening process of it need to be assisted by the considerations of path dependence and strategic interests of Japanese foreign relations. The key argument of this article is that 1) the negotiation process of the construction of EAS demonstrated that Japan had never adopted the identity of East Asia based on the ASEAN+3, 2) that Japan stuck to the path dependent inertia of the traditional regional policy, and 3) that such inertia was in line with the strategic interests of Japan to balance against Chinese influence.
