Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Modern cities are faced with various kinds of environmental crisis. In order to tackle this problem, multidisciplinary work is being conducted through technology convergence in urban design, architecture, design, and art fields. This study focuses on the role of interactive media in contemporary urban spaces, and explores the ways in which interactive media extends the concept of urban ecology through reconstruction of the relationship between human, society, and environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direction of practical design methodology to solve environmental problems. (Method) This study examined the change of ecological concepts that had been presented in relation to the urban environment and drew the framework for analyzing how to expand the ecological concept of interactive media in terms of ethico-aesthetics through theoretical review. Five types of cases were selected and analyzed, based on representative cases among interactive media works installed in the public space of the city. Based on the results, this study derived the main attributes and analyzed them. (Results) Case analysis was based on the characteristics of interactive media, and resulted in three aspects: information sharing, environmental experience, and technology production. First, in terms of information sharing, most cases focused on delivering messages rather than numerical accuracy, and had a certain level of publicness. Recently, social networking systems have been used to enhance the extendibility, and have decentralized and disorganized the means of information sharing. Second, in relation to the environmental experience, the way of reestablishing the human-environment relationship through the playfulness of sensation appeared, and the result is characterized as non-static and non-predictive by interactivity. The levels of social influence differed during or after the implementation of the work. Third, in relation to the production of technology, interactive media was fused with environmentally friendly technologies in related fields, and had a substantial environmental effect. As practical function was strengthened, aesthetic and empirical aspects tended to be weakened. In addition, although the economic effect varied depending on the applied technology, the contextual and social context in which the technology was used also played an important role. In all cases, strong evidence of interdisciplinary characteristics and technology convergence by industry-academia linkage and related field collaboration were found. (Conclusions) Interactive media is expanding the meaning of ecology in terms of the ways of activating ecological discourse through the sharing of environmental information, forming ecological aesthetics through reestablishing human-environment relations, and developing ecological technologies with environmental sustainability. As an ecological design methodology for dealing with environmental problems on an urban scale, the role and importance of interactive media should be acknowledged, and practical and theoretical research should be expanded in the future.
