Abstract

The sustainability of public spaces requires scrupulous interactions between the various elements such space contains, and can be accomplished not through simple physical permanency but through cultural and ecological interaction. Therefore environmental sculptures can be identified as significantly meaningful components interacting with public spaces. Environmental sculptures must be dealt with from a conjugate perspective, as art and as public design which is a public expansion of art. Therefore, this study sets out to systematically identify, as a substantive condition for sustainable public space design, the relationship between public spaces and environmental sculptures. As for study methodology, a variety of relevant theories will be examined, and urban public space components will be classified. Next, by identifying the types of relationships between environmental sculptures and public spaces, then analyzing advanced cases based on public space components and relationship type, the key factors impacting sustainability will be identified. A basic matter this methodological procedure has shed light on is that sustainable public spaces are urban spaces for the public good, where economy, society, and ecosystem are joined in harmony to enhance the quality of human life. In this light, three types of relationship between public spaces and environmental sculptures were established. The physical relationship was stressed in the location-dominant relationship type, while the location-dependant type underlined the cultural relationship, and the location-connective type highlighted the ecological relationship. Ultimately, as the degree of association with physical, cultural and ecological elements differs according to type, design must be performed with appropriate consideration for these relationships.
