Abstract

(Background and Purpose) With the “practical function” of universities actively participating in and volunteering in community issues being emphasized, the relationship between universities and communities is becoming increasingly important. The purpose of high adaptability to the field is to run a field-solving non-subject education program and provide ideas for solving problems in the community. (Method) Subsequent to a preliminary survey in May 2021, field trips and interviews were conducted in Gasi-ri, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, between June 3 to 5, 2021, to present a spatial improvement design process and ideas for regional revitalization. The study investigated the functions of universities and their cooperative relationships with local communities by seeking the industry-academic cooperation plans for the College of Arts and Physical Education. This study differed from previous studies as it investigated the current status of trends pointed out in the previous studies. This study recognizes problems through field trips and interviews with residents and business officials, and presents design ideas. The study proposes a method of revitalizing the space for the contribution of universities to local communities and discussed the expected effects and limitations. (Results) Through this study, it is possible to determine the cultural aspects of the remains of Gasiri called “Jatseong”, a historical and cultural element used for design storytelling. In terms of social aspects, it is possible to contribute to revitalizing the village by raising a sense of community by utilizing logos and local colors that connect tourism elements such as museums, experience spaces, and standard airfields that have been separated. From an economic perspective, it is possible to expect an increase in demand for village tourism by making it easier for residents and tourists to recognize nearby tourism attractions and resources through visual elements and design. (Conclusions) the findings of this study are significant as they can help further community problem-solving in the following ways: First, through extensive industry-academic cooperation, universities and local enterprises, governments, and residents can collaborate to solve regional issues and contribute to balanced development. Second, it is possible to cultivate talented people who adapt well to the field by operating a Living Lab-type human resource development program. Third, the program can be shared and disseminated to other universities by presenting excellent examples of field-oriented education programs for human resource development. This will serve as an opportunity to explore the possibility of academic/industrial cooperation between the College of Arts and Physical Education and local communities by solving community issues. For proper execution, it is necessary to conduct further research and designate a group of experts or project managers.
