Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the advancement of digital technology and the proliferation of contactless culture, leading to the rapid emergence of the metaverse. The metaverse, a digital world that integrates social, economic, and cultural activities using virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies, is gaining attention in the performing arts sector as a new platform that can realize presence, simultaneity, and interactivity. This study analyzes the key attributes of the metaverse and the characteristics of performing arts to provide foundational data for the development of a platform capable of implementing metaverse performance content in the theater and musical genres. Through this, the study aims to explore the direction for sustainable metaverse performance platforms and investigate new possibilities for performing arts within the metaverse space. (Method) The study focuses on theater and musical performances conducted in the metaverse space from 2020, when metaverse performances began in earnest, to December 2023. The research methodology involves literature review and prior studies to identify the key attributes of the metaverse necessary for developing domestic metaverse performance content. It then analyzes the extent to which these attributes are applied across different case types. (Results) This study found that mixed reality metaverse performances showed a higher degree of attribute application in terms of presence compared to virtual reality metaverse performances. Mixed reality performances stimulate various senses (visual, olfactory, tactile), providing a high sense of reality. On the other hand, virtual reality metaverse performances enhance auditory immersion by utilizing professional voice actors and influencers. In the case of musical performances, designing and providing actual costumes and using motion capture for choreography enhanced the sense of reality and interactivity. To maintain continuity, a virtual world with diverse content was necessary. In all cases, audience participation increased interactivity, and simultaneous access provided a sense of concurrency. Particularly, virtual reality performances on global platforms were exposed to a large number of users, predicting the potential of global metaverse performance content. (Conclusions) This study provides foundational data for the development of metaverse performance content and platforms in the theater and musical genres. First, a virtual world with continuous performance planning and long-term storytelling content is necessary to ensure the continuity of performances. Second, immersive performance experiences using AI technology are essential to enhance audience engagement. Third, an environment for real-time interaction with the audience should be provided to increase the immersion of performances. Fourth, supporting multiple languages to allow simultaneous viewing by a global audience can enhance the potential of global cultural content. Fifth, using digital currency for ticket sales and virtual item sales can create new economic revenue models.
