Abstract
(Background and Purpose) With the acceleration of urbanization and the diversification of urban space needs, public space has shifted evolved from functional design to narrative design focusing on cultural, historical and social significance. In the 1970s, the wave of public participation began influencing urban practice, leading to the shift of rights and forms of public space design to society and the public. Concurrently, the transition from classical narratology to post-classical narratology has enriched spatial methodologies and offered new ideas for design participants. Hence this study aims to explore the participation types of subjects involved in public space design and their impact on narrative design, so as to provide a theoretical basis for building a better narrative design framework in public space. (Method) Firstly, through theoretical investigation and analysis of the elements and development trend of the public space design subject, the participation mode and characteristics of the design subject are obtained. Secondly, it examines the distinct characteristics and dialectical relations of narrative subject in classical narratology and post-classical narratology. Thirdly, by focusing on a contemporary multi-agent cooperative public space case as the analysis object, it specifically analyzes the participation types of narrative public space design subjects and the influence of different types on space and narrative. (Results) First and foremost, given the diversity of public space types and the complexity of social subjects, diversified design subjects are becoming more and more important for space design. The government, experts, stakeholders and residents are collectively constitute the primary participants, leveraging their individual perspectives to shape the space. Secondly, the narrative subject exhibits a strong correlation with the characteristics of the public space design subject. Diverse subjects and participation methods contribute to unlocking the narrative and communicative potential of public spaces. Thirdly, there are six types of participation: expert cooperation, collusion, co-construction (actual participation, material participation), co-construction and spontaneity. (Conclusions) Urban public spaces are intricate and varied, with distinct social subjects possessing diverse values, reference systems and modes of actions. Choosing the appropriate design subject based on the content and design approach of urban narratives helps cultivate a narrative-oriented urban atmosphere. It is hoped that this study can objectively select the participation types of design subjects according to the specific conditions of the space, improve the quality of space and the effect of narrative expression, promote the development of public participation, and establish a solid foundation for urban construction.
