Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In the 1970s and 1980s, narrative was introduced into the field of urban science, providing a new way to shape the cultural connotation of cities. The theory of narrative space design is studied by referring to the narrative structures and methods of other fields. However, with the development of classical narratology post-classical narratology, its research has expanded from the structure of stories to the level of human cognition and emotion experience. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the elements of narrative translation. Besides, public space, takes urban events as the narrative theme, and how to skillfully integrate urban events into public space is another key topic of narrative design. Therefore, the purpose is to clarify the elements that public space should have in the process of narrative translation, and to find out the feasible method of public space representation of urban stories. Through narrative design strategy, urban stories can be reflected in the daily life of citizens in a more vivid and diversified design. (Method) First, the five elements of narrative translation are obtained by clarifying the content and development of narrative research through theoretical investigation. Secondly, the five elements of narrative translation are combined with the characteristics of public space to analyze the specific content and characteristics of the translation strategy of narrative design of public space. Thirdly, based on the research content, a case analysis framework is developed to conclude the role of narrative design strategies in the expression of urban events. (Results) First, the public space created by urban events is applied to the space design with different narrative strategies using the translational elements. Mediums provide multiple sensory experiences. Second, the linear order of the moving lines is conveyed directly to the user based on the content of the story, while the non-linear order focuses on multiple senses and perceptions of the story. Third, narrative techniques can be divided into suggestive and explicit expression techniques to form a reasonable relationship between translation elements and the story. Fourth, people follow narrative elements to form emotional changes in the process of space movement. Fifth, the dual meaning of story content and social level is conveyed through material and experience in the narrative space. (Conclusions) Narrative design breaks traditional design ideas. Linking narratives from other fields to public Spaces and creating meaningful urban environments can help provide rich experiences for people. The narrative design strategy helps the narrator (design participant) and the receiver (user) to form resonance of thought and emotion. It is hoped that this study can provide some support for the practice of narrative public space. Methods to enhance the expression ability and appeal of spatial language to urban events and deepen the meaning value of public space.
