Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Research on pilotis, an element of outdoor spaces in apartment complexes, has only been treated as one of the several elements of outdoor spaces, and research results on pilotis spaces are insufficient. By investigating the needs of apartment residents and the problems with pilotis, we aimed to find ways to effectively use pilotis spaces in apartments. (Method) Among the apartment complexes in Daegu Metropolitan City that were occupied after 2000, six apartment complexes with pilotis installed are targeted. Through architectural design drawings and site visits, the types of pilotis were classified and analyzed by planning elements and spaces, and a survey was conducted to analyze the results. (Result) Among the planning elements that comprise the pilotis space, the structural format shows a change from the column, column + wall format that emphasizes space efficiency to the column + wall, wall format that prioritizes structural safety. The elevation format is a mixture of fully open and partially open, and there are two complexes structured in a single-story style to increase the sense of change and openness in elevation. In the cross-sectional format, the territoriality of a space is secured by partially placing level differences on the floor. In terms of usage, the pilotis space is used as the main entrance and serves as an open space. It is used as an entrance to the main building, a movement passageway within the complex, a vehicle passageway, community facilities, rest facilities, and playgrounds. In the case of an apartment complex composed entirely of pilotis, less than half of the space was used for a specific purpose. In a survey conducted separately among the expert and resident groups, the necessity of installing pilotis was recognized. The expert group showed high satisfaction with the pilotis space installation ratio, and the resident group showed high satisfaction with accessibility. Satisfaction was the highest with height in both groups. In particular, pilotis spaces with low wall structures had a low sense of openness and showed a high level of anxiety about crime. (Conclusion) The quantitative expansion of pilotis is important for organizing the space of pilotis in apartment complexes; however, the nature of individual spaces must be clear. Pilotis floor heights should be configured in various ways to increase accessibility; to relieve anxiety about crime, a natural surveillance function should be secured through visual openings to encourage the activation of the pilotis space.
