Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Letters are a kind of promised sign system that expresses the shape of syllables in lines, and they are one of the formative forms made by humans that have developed along with social and cultural changes for a long time. From designing the style of letters themselves to industrial products or furniture that have been reinterpreted in three dimensions by disassembling and recombining each element of letters, to creating new images or reinterpreting them, The purpose of this work is to discover new forms and functions by converting the flat formative elements of letters into three dimensions. (Method) As a research method to explore the direction of the work, 1) The meaning and characteristics of letters were reviewed. 2) It was intended to identify the molding elements of letters that can be reinterpreted in three dimensions. This is to find the differentiation of work research by examining the characteristics and expression methods of characters used in existing cases and understanding the degree to which they can be inferred from the results. 3) Through various design drafts by the processes of sketching, scale prototyping, and 3D modeling, the formation elements of letters were reinterpreted from a structural perspective. 3) Through the production of a working prototype that can be used in real life, the internal structure of lighting, considering usability verification and formulation, was also reviewed. (Results) Based on the formative elements of the English alphabet T, three different lines that cross each other design mood lighting. This combination has three interesting usability characteristics. Among the formative elements discovered through the experiment, it was noted that even if the thickness and proportion vary, the shape can be inferred, and that new usability can be suggested as the center of gravity varies depending on the location where the lines intersect. Based on the structural characteristics created by the crossing of metal circular pipes in different directions, it was made to be used against the wall and floor, and part of the metal pipe was processed with a 3D laser cut to place light on the surface of the metal pipe like one body without a separate protrusion. (Conclusions) This study is significant in that it proposes a product that can be used in practice by structurally reinterpreting various formative features, such as the combination of intersecting lines, proportionality, and thickness change found in a single character, beyond the limitations of existing cases that remained in the single shape expansion of letters.
