Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In the art and design fields, lines are a basic tool for expressing creators' thoughts and appear in various ways of expression, such as making directions with straight lines and curves, expressions of perspective through thickness, and structural interpretation due to overlap. The line is an important material for the story of the creative process in that people can look into the process of thinking until the creator completes the work. Beyond its role as an expression tool, this study aims to discover new aesthetics and functions by using the properties of lines as materials. (Method) As a research method to discover the properties of the line as a material, 1) a comparative analysis of the examples of works that emphasized the line through various materials was conducted, which helped identify the properties of the line. These helped in the direction of this research. 2) In order to overcome the limit of the line that can be expressed in a plane, a formative experiment was conducted through a 3D drawing that changes to the x, y, and z axes using metal wires of various thicknesses and strengths. Through this, it was possible to confirm the formative possibility according to the properties of the line in the three dimensions and to verify the functional part before actual work production. 3) Metals were chosen in that the material of the work was high in shape retention due to its sufficient strength, produced to various standards, and was functionally advantageous for structural interpretation. (Results) Furniture design was proposed with a formative keyword, connectivity, and properties of lines discovered through experiments. It was manufactured in a 1:1 full-size by visiting a metal processing company, and a thin aluminum round bar was used to emphasize the image of the line and to have a functional lightweight. Also, it was confirmed whether repetitive production was possible with the same quality in terms of production efficiency. The side of the work connected by one line looks like a chair with a backrest, but the three-dimensional shape functions as a stool, and the lines expressed as the backrest of the chair from the side view are reinterpreted as a function to hang clothes or handles for moving. (Conclusions) This study is meaningful as a work in that it discovered the properties of lines through various experiments and used them as materials for aesthetics to interpret them as new forms and functions.
