Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In modern society, lighting is used as an aesthetic material that defines the image of space from a new perspective beyond simply illuminating up dark places. From living products such as pendant lighting and table lighting used indoors to landscape lighting that illuminates roads, bridges, and buildings, landscape lighting emphasizes the depth of the space and reveals the beauty of the architecture through harmony with its environment. This study aims s to propose an architectural lighting design that can be developed as a series with a single design concept by reinterpreting the change in formulation as a functional element. (Method) As a research method to examine the role of light as an aesthetic material and the function of architectural lighting, 1) cases of architectural lighting that can be installed alone and have the possibility of formative approach than buried lighting were compared and analyzed. This was done in order to identify the basic conditions of the form and lighting of existing products and refer to set the design direction of future work research. 2) Various design proposals were reviewed through the process of sketching, drawing, and 3D prototyping, and the study was conducted so that the change in the form could lead to the expansion of the function. 3) In collaboration with a lighting company, we reviewed the structure and verified the amount of light according to its function through the production of a real-scale 1:1 working mock-up. (Results) By one design concept, a lighting series that could be functionally expanded into lights with different functions was designed. Inspired by the appearance and movement of the tango, it was possible to adjust the angle from side to side using a rotating structure, allowing for more abundant light to be enjoyed. This lighting series consists of three lights: tree lighting, wall lighting, and bollard lighting. Due to the nature of being installed outdoors, metal materials were chosen for its durability and resistance to deformation. The composition of the two identical shapes facing each other was impressive, and the use of a single mould for the actual production was also beneficial in terms of production costs. (Conclusions) This study is significant in that it proposed architectural lights that existed mainly as different designs within a single design language, and reinterpreted the movement as an aesthetic element to discover the possibility of expressing light in various ways while remaining faithful to the function of each light.
