Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The impact of color psychology on healing spaces for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) sufferers is a crucial issue. PTSD is a mental health disorder triggered by traumatic experiences, and therapeutic approaches utilizing color psychology are being explored to aid in overcoming it. Color psychology studies how colors affect human emotions, psychological states, and behaviors, potentially influencing the subconscious. Thus, this research aims to investigate whether utilizing color psychology in PTSD healing spaces can practically benefit the healing process based on previous studies. (Research Methods) First, a theoretical review and analysis of prior research on color psychology, PTSD, and healing space design are conducted to establish the research model and hypotheses. Second, a preliminary survey is conducted using a questionnaire with a reliability score above 0.65 derived from earlier research. Third, based on the preliminary survey results, items with reliability and validity scores (Cronbach's alpha) above 0.7 are selected for the main survey, which is then analyzed using SPSS 26.0 for linear regression. Finally, exploratory factor analysis and correlation analysis of the research model are conducted, and hypotheses are tested following Baron & Kenny's(1986) and Sobel's test procedures to verify mediation effects. The study concludes with an analysis of the impact of color psychology in healing space design on PTSD, including perceptions, effects, evaluation metrics, and case studies. (Results) This study analyzed the mediating effect of color psychology on the relationship between satisfaction with the healing space and the alleviation of PTSD symptoms. The Baron & Kenny and Sobel's test results provided significant findings: for H1 (F = 16.068, p < .001), H2 (F = 25.786, p < .001), and H3 (t = -2.289, p < .05). For H4, it was confirmed that the effect of healing space satisfaction on PTSD alleviation decreased after controlling for color psychology. Sobel's test indicated a significant mediation effect with regression coefficients of 𝑎=0.496 (standard error 𝑆𝑎=0.048) for the independent to mediator variable relationship, and 𝑏=0.214 (standard error 𝑆𝑏=0.093) for the mediator to dependent variable relationship, resulting in a significant statistic 𝑍=−2.245 (p < 0.05). (Conclusions) The study confirms that satisfaction with healing spaces significantly affects the alleviation of PTSD symptoms, with color psychology playing a critical mediating role. The mediation effect was validated through Sobel's test and Baron & Kenny's analysis, showing that higher satisfaction with healing spaces, facilitated by color psychology, leads to reduced PTSD symptoms. These results suggest that color psychology in healing space design plays a crucial role in PTSD treatment, and all research hypotheses were found to be significant. The study emphasizes the importance of color psychology in enhancing healing space satisfaction and aiding in PTSD recovery.
