Abstract
(Background and Purpose) This study explores and categorizes the subjectivity of pre-seniors concerning their perceptions of the "last space of life," to develop spatial design solutions tailored to each type. It seeks to understand from a subjective perspective the spatial perceptions of pre-seniors, a significant demographic entering old age. The living spaces of older adults encompass complex concepts that include neighborhood and community interactions that significantly impact their identity and meaning of their lives. Therefore, this study provides practical insights that can improve the living environments of the aging population and assist in policy and design strategies. (Method) This study applied the Q methodology, which is suitable for addressing human subjectivity. It is a mixed research method that combines quantitative and qualitative research, focusing on internal understanding rather than external facts, and categorizes it by analyzing the correlations and factor relationships among individuals. The study involved 30 pre-seniors aged 55–64 (designated as P samples) who were required to distribute 40 Q samples on an 11-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using principal component analysis through the Ken_Q analysis program. (Results) Based on the characteristics of the individuals in each group, five types of subjective perceptions are identified regarding the "last space of life" among pre-seniors. First, the “Nature Affinity and Dignity Seeking” type values a peaceful space in harmony with nature and has a strong desire to maintain dignity. Second, the “Care Space and Preparation Oriented” type prioritizes spaces that facilitate caregiving and environments prepared for death. Third, the “Personal Choice and Independence Oriented” type prefers an independent space that upholds personal dignity. Fourth, the “Familiar Environment and Medical Care Oriented” type favors being with close ones in a medically supportive location. Fifth, the “Family Bonding Space Oriented” type emphasizes preparing for the end in their family home and considers family needs. (Conclusions) The findings provide diverse subjective perceptions of the “last space of life” and implications for design-oriented services and spatial planning suitable for each type. Spaces with greenery and a tranquil environment are needed for those preferring a nature-friendly setting, whereas those who value care require an accessible care support system. Additionally, spaces that accommodate frequent family visits or residencies should be considered for types that prioritize family bonds. This subjective approach enables spatial designs that reflect the needs of various pre-senior types, contributing to the enhancement of their quality of life in an aging society.
