A Post-Work Renter’s Paradise
Abstract
(Research Background and Purpose) Humans constantly long for and imagine the future, but accurately predicting it is fundamentally impossible. Despite this dilemma, we tirelessly envision and prepare for the times and situations ahead. However, technostress and uncertainties caused by rapidly changing technologies complicate the realization of intrinsic desires that will remain significant in the future. In this context, speculative design has garnered attention as an effective approach for critically exploring and illuminating the future. This study aims to investigate the structures and roles of speculative design as a means of reinterpreting desires in future spatial environments. By doing so, we examine the evolutionary reasons behind human desires, cognitive mechanisms, and their relationship with speculative design methodologies, emphasizing that in addressing future spatial issues, design should function not merely as a means of technological glorification but as a tool for reinterpreting inherent desires. (Methods) For this research, first, we conducted a literature review to examine human desire instincts, the concepts and methodologies of speculative design, and their interrelation with cognitive structures. Second, we constructed an interpretative framework by utilizing the concepts of the Future Cone and the reinterpretation of intrinsic desires to analyze speculative design cases. Third, using this framework, we conducted an in-depth interpretation of speculative design projects related to future spaces that have been published in the past decade and derived the structure of intrinsic desire reinterpretation. (Results) The interpreted cases critically re-examine human intrinsic desires in various future scenarios through space design. The 'Space10' scenario explores the desire for cooperation and relationships through technology; The 'Slab Stack' scenario investigates the desire for dominance and hierarchy by critiquing capitalistic architecture; the 'A Post-Work Renter’s Paradise' scenario sheds light on survival desires and mating and nurturing desires by focusing on humans and spaces liberated from all forms of production obligations. (Conclusions) Through this study, we confirmed that speculative design enables a human-centered and critical approach in future spatial scenarios by revealing the existence of intrinsic desires and reinterpreting them. This suggests that in the process of designing our preferred future, design should serve as a tool for critical reflection on fundamental human needs and values, rather than merely praising technological advancements. Speculative design awakens the unchanging intrinsic desires even in rapidly changing future technological environments, providing compass-like directionality in future spatial activities, and is expected to create richer and more meaningful future spaces based on this.
