Abstract

(Background and Purpose) As of 2025, our society has entered a super-aged society, necessitating technological solutions to support seniors' independent living and enhance their quality of life. In response, smart furniture—integrating cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things(IoT), artificial intelligence(AI), and robotics—has emerged as a key product capable of creating new value in senior living environments. Understanding the impact of multifunctionality, intelligence, connectivity, ease of use, and usefulness on user satisfaction and continuance intention is critical for both academic research and practical applications. Additionally, examining the mediating effect of user satisfaction within these relationships provides further insight into how smart furniture is continuously adopted. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the key factors influencing the continuance intention of smart furniture for active seniors by integrating the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM) and Post-Acceptance Model(PAM) through empirical analysis. (Method) To examine the continuance intention of smart furniture, this study conducted an online survey targeting active seniors aged 50 to 69. Respondents consisted of faculty members and parents of students majoring in furniture design, ensuring a high level of understanding of smart furniture. Data were collected through Google Forms, and 120 valid responses were analyzed. Using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0, reliability and validity tests were conducted, and structural equation modeling(SEM) was employed to test 11 research hypotheses. The independent variables included multifunctionality, intelligence, connectivity, ease of use, and usefulness. User satisfaction was set as a mediating variable, while continuance intention was defined as the dependent variable. (Results) The findings indicate that multifunctionality, ease of use, and usefulness had significant positive effects on user satisfaction, which in turn strongly enhanced continuance intention. Furthermore, user satisfaction partially mediated the relationships between multifunctionality and usefulness with continuance intention, while it fully mediated the relationship between ease of use and continuance intention. However, intelligence and connectivity did not show significant effects on either user satisfaction or continuance intention. These findings suggest that, while technological advancements in smart furniture are important, practical usability and functional benefits play a more crucial role in user retention and long-term adoption. (Conclusions) This study integrates TAM and PAM to analyze the continuance intention of smart furniture, providing both academic and practical implications for the future development of smart furniture, particularly in senior-friendly designs. In particular, user satisfaction was found to play a crucial mediating role in the adoption process, significantly influencing continuance intention. These findings emphasize that the development of smart furniture should prioritize intuitive usability, functionality, and tangible benefits for users. These results offer valuable insights for the design, development, and distribution strategies of smart furniture in the digital super-aged society, contributing to its effective implementation in real-life settings.
