Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The term "brand" has become a familiar concept, and "fandom" has become a widespread phenomenon. As a result, fandom, which was traditionally centered around celebrities, has expanded its scope to include brands, leading to the emergence of brand fandom in the consumer experience. Brand fandom goes beyond brand loyalty, as consumers form emotional connections with brands and voluntarily establish communities, making it a crucial element of corporate branding strategies. This study aims to systematically analyze the structure and process of brand fandom formation based on the fandom framework, and the stages of brand fandom framework across different brands. (Method) This study builds upon prior research on brand fandom and fandom frameworks to conduct a comprehensive theoretical review from various perspectives. Through this process, a step-by-step framework for brand fandom formation was developed and applied as an analytical framework for case analysis. Samsung and Apple, two technology sector brands ranked among the top 10 in brand fandom rankings, were selected as case study subjects for comparative analysis, leading to valuable insights. (Results) The case study results indicate that in the Brand Fandom Framework, ‘identifying’ occurs earlier in the process than ‘absorbing’ due to its relationship with the fan icon factor. It was confirmed that ‘identifying’ plays a key role in the brand fandom framework for both Apple and Samsung. While Apple exhibited a strong ‘identifying’ phase following the emotional impact, which naturally progressed into ‘absorbing’, ‘worshipping’, and ‘dedicating’, Samsung demonstrated a relatively weaker ‘identifying’ stage, resulting in lower brand loyalty compared to Apple. This suggests that in the Brand Fandom Framework, identification precedes absorption, and consumers form stronger fandoms when they associate a brand with their personal identity. Additionally, Apple's brand fandom, which targets a niche group that prioritizes innovation, creativity, and aesthetic values over mass appeal and compatibility, was observed to be more exclusive and intense. (Conclusions) This study highlights the significance of brand fandom formation and the necessity of establishing a step-by-step framework for its development, concluding with actionable directions. First, the fandom framework should be applied in brand management and operations, with strategies aligned to the stages of the proposed framework. Second, the study suggests a brand fandom formation framework comprising the stages of Touching-Identifying-Absorbing-Worshiping-Dedicating. This sequence reflects the early emergence of ‘Identifying’ due to the connection between brand image and consumer identity, contrasting with traditional fandom frameworks. Third, the findings underscore the pivotal roles of habitus and identity expression in fostering brand fandom. Brands that prioritize these aspects and target niche audiences with strong social symbolism can cultivate more powerful and loyal fandoms.
