Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The rapid urbanization and increasing traffic volume have necessitated the development of underground highways, which offer advantages such as reduced land acquisition costs, minimized environmental impact, and stable operation under extreme weather conditions. However, long-distance driving environments exceeding 20 km can lead to heightened psychological distress and fatigue due to the absence of natural visual stimuli. Particularly in tunnels longer than 3 km, drivers experience increased cognitive load due to spatial confinement and restricted visibility, contributing to high fatality rates in tunnel-related traffic accidents. (Method) This study conducts a meta-analysis of research published between 2010 and 2023 to quantitatively assess the effects of visual environmental improvements in long tunnels on reducing drivers' cognitive load. A systematic literature review was conducted, retrieving 1,080 papers from databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. After removing duplicates and applying selection criteria, 25 empirical studies focusing on long tunnels or similar underground spaces were analyzed. Independent and dependent variables were identified, and statistical methods, including a random-effects model and Q-statistics, were employed to evaluate heterogeneity. The results were visualized using Forest Plots and Funnel Plots. (Results) In the tunnel environment, lighting demonstrated the greatest effect on reducing cognitive load(=0.793), followed closely by color (=0.788), while graphics showed a moderate effect (=0.494). Significant differences in subgroup effects (Qb=19.533, p<0.001) indicate the necessity of sensitivity analysis during design. Funnel Plot analysis revealed some variability among studies, confirming that improvements centered on lighting and color are critical for reducing cognitive load. These findings provide optimal design directions for mitigating cognitive load in long underground highways. (Conclusions) The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. First, in the visual environment design of long tunnels, lighting is the most critical factor in reducing cognitive load, and it was confirmed that color has a similar effect. Second, although graphics showed a moderate effect that was lower than those of lighting and color, applying natural scenery graphics at specific points can help alleviate fatigue and enhance safety. Consequently, a systematic approach that considers the priority of lighting, color, and graphics is necessary for optimal visual environment design within tunnels. In the future, the research will be expanded into an empirical study analyzing the interaction of color and lighting through VR and driving simulations.
