Abstract

(Background and Purpose) This study analyzed existing research on interior space design (color, pattern, lighting) to reduce the feelings of pressure, confinement and fatigue experienced by underground highways drivers. Furthermore, a survey was conducted among experts in domestic tunnel design and construction, using objective vocabulary (adjectives), and the results were analyzed using a semantic differentiation method (SD). Based on this, a research direction was established to enhance the visual cognitive behavior of underground highway drivers. The ultimate goal of the research is to study underground highway space design to improve the convenience and safety of underground highway drivers. (Method) This study was conducted in two ways concerning the wall space design of underground highways. Firstly, representative international research findings were analyzed to investigate the impact of the color of underground highway spaces on drivers and the influence of wall color changes on drivers' cognition and psychology. Secondly, an SD-scale emotional survey was conducted from July to August 2023 targeting 101 experts with extensive tunnel driving experience in Korea to understand drivers' sentiments towards colors, lighting, and finishes inside tunnels. The survey analysis results will be used as design data to enhance the convenience and safety of underground highways. (Results) The color decoration on the inner walls of tunnels is effective in terms of driver behavior, but excessive color changes can weaken this effect. Drivers' reactions vary depending on the color decoration scheme, and driving experience and gender do not have a significant impact. The color and lighting of three tunnels studied domestically are generally evaluated negatively, and in particular, the "darkness" can pose a risk of drowsy driving. Moreover, the finish materials of the tunnels received negative feedback, and in certain urban tunnels, drivers might feel uncomfortable. (Conclusions) This study focused on analyzing the impact of the interior design (color, pattern, lighting) of underground highways on drivers' emotions and behavior. The main finding was that the color decoration of tunnel walls positively affects driving behavior, but excessive use of color diminishes this effect. Additionally, some tunnels received negative evaluations for their color and lighting, especially in urban areas where elements caused feelings of unease among drivers. Future research plans to concentrate on developing design guidelines to enhance drivers' convenience and safety using VR/AI technologies. Hence, subsequent studies aim to focus on researching the color, pattern, and lighting of underground highway interiors to develop guidelines that can reduce drivers' fatigue and claustrophobia. To realize this objective, the findings from the study will be integrated with VR/AI technologies, specifically virtual underground highway wall simulations and AI-driven research, to formulate the best guidelines regarding color, pattern, and lighting.
