Abstract
(Background and Purpose)In recent years, the field of spatial design has shown a growing emphasis on user experiences grounded in sensory engagement. Within this trend, the structure through which space forms meaning via user interaction has garnered increasing attention. Space is no longer merely a physical backdrop but serves as a medium for narrative experiences through sensory stimuli and interpretive processes. This study aims to explore how spatial narratives are formed through user interaction and sensory experience, and to examine the structural role that spaces—where sensory stimuli and user interaction converge—play in shaping narrative. To achieve this, the research compares and analyzes three brand showrooms and three exhibition spaces to identify how user-centered spatial experiences are extended into narrative forms. (Method) This study reviews prior research and literature on narrative, sensory experience, and user interaction, and establishes a theoretical model of user experience that progresses from sensory stimulation to perception, cognition, immersion, and interpretation. Based on this, an analytical framework was constructed comprising three dimensions: sensory design elements, the structure of user interaction, and the unfolding of narrative experiences. This study adopts a qualitative approach, focusing on the exploration of meaning structures through case interpretation and comparison rather than validation through statistical or quantitative data. Cases were selected from domestic brand showrooms and exhibition spaces created after 2020, which feature distinct sensory production and user-centered narrative structures. These include Gentle Monster House Dosan, Nike Seoul, and Samsung Gangnam (brand showrooms), and Arte Museum Jeju, the National Hangeul Museum, and the National Museum of Korea (exhibition spaces). Through comparative analysis, the study aims to identify how spatial narratives are formed in each case, draw out commonalities and differences, and propose typological design strategies that may be applied to future spatial design. (Results) The analysis revealed distinct differences in the ways each space type constructs sensory stimuli, user interaction, and narrative development. Brand showrooms focus on the brand’s identity and message, utilizing emotional and digital stimuli to provoke immediate user responses. These are designed to lead the user from sensation to action, ultimately reinforcing the brand story. In contrast, exhibition spaces rely on immersive, multi-sensory experiences and encourage users’ interpretive engagement through narrative elements embedded in the spatial flow. These results show that exhibitions prioritize information delivery and message communication over direct engagement. (Conclusions) This study demonstrates that spatial narratives are shaped through the structured relationship between sensory experience and user interaction. It highlights the importance of integrating interpretive depth and immersive design in future spatial planning. The findings suggest that narrative strategies grounded in user experience can serve as essential tools for designing engaging, communicative, and emotionally resonant spaces.
