Abstract

(Background and Purpose) With the rise of digital platforms and social media, brand–consumer interaction is increasingly mediated by immaterial channels, yet physical brand spaces remain critical sites of embodied experience. Among them, fashion and beauty flagship stores in dense urban areas function not only as points of sale but as key venues for narrating brand identity and curating branded atmospheres. However, many spaces still rely on visually dominant scenography that marginalizes other senses. Building on the premise that spatial experience is essentially multisensory, this study investigates flagship stores in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to quantify the level and balance of visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile stimuli, and to examine how these multisensory indicators relate to visitors’sense of perceived integration, immersion, and revisit intention within brand experience spaces. (Method) The empirical study targeted four fashion flagship stores in the Gangnam area and collected self-administered questionnaires from 300 visitors (75 per store) in their teens to fifties through on-site intercept surveys using both online links and paper forms. Based on prior research and theoretical review, variables related to multisensory experience and experiential satisfaction (unity, immersion, revisit intention) were organized into a research model and hypotheses. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 26.0; reliability and factor structure were verified using Cronbach’s alpha and principal component analysis, and correlation analysis and scatterplots were employed to examine the relationships between sensory indices and experiential indicators. (Results) Across all four cases, higher multisensory levels were significantly associated with lower sensory imbalance, indicating that once sensory input exceeds a certain threshold, the four modalities tend to be organized more evenly in space. Multisensory level showed moderate positive relationships with integration, immersion, and revisit intention, whereas sensory imbalance exhibited weak negative relationships, most clearly with revisit intention. Strong positive associations among integration, immersion, and revisit intention were found in every case, confirming a sequential link from experience to immersion to behavioral intention. (Conclusions) The study demonstrates the value of translating sensory composition in flagship stores into quantitative indicators of multisensory level and imbalance, and clarifying their links with experiential satisfaction. The findings suggest that prioritizing balanced and integrated sensory narratives over the mere intensification of a single sensory modality more effectively enhances revisit intention through integration and immersion, underscoring the need for brands and designers to move beyond visually dominated spatial staging toward carefully coordinated multisensory brand-space design. These insights provide a practical framework for planning, evaluating, and refining future flagship environments that aim to foreground rich, multisensory brand experiences.
