Abstract
(Background and Purpose) With the rapid advancement of digital technology and media environments, contemporary spaces have evolved beyond merely serving as physical settings to become, becoming complex media that offer rich sensory and emotional experiences. In particular, as visually oriented information consumption becomes increasingly common in today’s digital era, the concept of ‘imagetelling’ has emerged as a significant and influential framework that mediates emotional interactions between users and spatial environments. Within this context, there is a growing need for systematic and rigorous academic research to examine and define the impact of imagetelling on the emotional design characteristics of spatial environments. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the specific effects of imagetelling on emotional design in modern spaces characterized by the widespread use of digital media and visually centered communication. (Methodology) This research selected and analyzed recent domestic academic papers related to imagetelling and prior studies on emotional design. Through this comprehensive literature review, five key characteristics of imagetelling—symbolism, narrativity, interactivity, representativeness, and scenographic direction—were identified, along with five essential attributes of emotional design. These features were structured into an analytical framework used to empirically examine the relationship between imagetelling and emotional design characteristics. Diverse types of modern cultural spaces, including immersive video galleries, historical museums, brand promotional halls, flagship stores, theme parks, and children’s experience centers, were selected as research subjects. For each selected case, the actual implementation of imagetelling elements and emotional design characteristics was comparatively analyzed through field investigations and literature review to explore their interactions and manifestations systematically. (Results) The analysis revealed that key elements of imagetelling are closely integrated with the aesthetic, symbolic, interactive, and spatial aspects of emotional design, which vary depending on spatial type and user experience. Placeness and symbolism were most evident in immersive video environments, while symbolism and aesthetics were most strongly emphasized in brand promotional halls and flagship stores. In children’s experience centers, representativeness and emotionality were strongly expressed. These findings clearly demonstrate that the combinations and relative importance of imagetelling elements and emotional design characteristics iffer significantly depending on the specific spatial context. (Conclusion) This study confirms that imagetelling plays a significant and a significant role in realizing emotional design characteristics and creating distinctive spatial experiences. The results strongly suggest that imagetelling holds considerable practical potential for application in various design fields, such as including cultural spaces, brand environments, and experiential exhibitions. Ultimately, serves as a strategic and creative method for enhancing experiential value by mediating and amplifying emotional design.
