Abstract
(Background and Purpose) South Korea’s broadcast graphics sector entered a major turning point during the coverage of the 21st presidential election in 2025, when Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) was deployed on a large scale. Despite the rapid diffusion of technology across production pipelines, academic discussions regarding Gen AI in broadcast graphics remain scarce. Therefore, this study systematically collected and analyzed every Gen AI-produced graphic that appeared in 2025 election broadcasts to document, typify, and objectively record the early status, functions, and constraints of Gen AI graphics by category. The ultimate aim is to provide foundational data for subsequent scholarly and industrial debates. (Method) The corpus comprised sixty hours of archived election programming from five networks—KBS, MBC, YTN, MBN, and JTBC—that explicitly labelled segments as “AI generated.” Using a qualitative case study approach, this study (1) established an analytical framework through a review of domestic and international literature; (2) applied that framework to classify the collected graphics into four categories: narrative construction, data-display graphics, data-display backdrops, and character depiction; and (3) assessed each Gen AI example in terms of usage frequency, functional contribution, limiting factors, and future prospects. This study focused on a qualitative analysis based on the professional expertise of the researcher, an active broadcast graphics designer, owing to limitations in accessing internal data from each broadcasting company and policies on business confidentiality. (Results) Twenty one distinct Gen AI graphics were identified. Data-display backdrops accounted for the largest share (n = 8), and owing to their versatile variations, they appear poised to become baseline visual assets in future broadcasts. Seven narrative-construction pieces supported channel branding and emotional immersion by streamlining formerly labor-intensive sequences through Gen AI. Six character-depiction works heightened viewer attention, but were deployed sparingly because of legal and ethical concerns related to portrait rights and deepfake risk. No Gen AI use was observed in data-display graphics, primarily owing to technological constraints affecting accuracy and real-time synchronization. (Conclusions) Gen AI delivered diverse visual innovations during the 2025 election broadcast. The low-risk data-display backdrops achieved the widest adoption, narrative pieces reinforced brand identity, and character depictions enhanced on-air salience. Nevertheless, stylistic inconsistency, portrait-rights liabilities, deep fake threats, and data integrity issues emerged as key obstacles to broader diffusion. Although this study is limited to officially disclosed examples and does not address production decision-making or audience reception, it indicates that Gen AI has already become a commonplace tool in broadcast-graphics production. This research provides a foundation for future investigations in the field by analyzing the technology’s initial manifestations in terms of its current status, functions, constraints, and prospects.
