Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The proliferation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is reshaping the news content production landscape. In news graphics, Gen AI is employed for its efficiency, yet this adoption is paralleled by significant concerns regarding reliability and ethics. While academic discourse has largely concentrated on AI's role in text generation, a critical research gap exists concerning its impact on visual content. This study classifies broadcast news graphics into rhetorical discourse modes (narrative, expository, and descriptive) to analyze the frequency and patterns of Gen AI usage. The study’s purpose is to empirically define AI's status in news production, providing foundational data for future strategies and research. (Method) This study conducted a quantitative analysis of news graphics broadcast by the 24-hour news channel YTN over a 91-day period from April 1 to June 30, 2025. After a data refining process on an initial raw dataset of more than 12,000 items, a final sample of 7,366 'insert normal' graphics (full-screen visuals) was established. Applying Alexander Bain's theory of rhetorical modes, all graphics were classified into narrative, expository, and descriptive types. This classification framework was validated through consultation with 17 industry experts. The use of Gen AI was cross-verified using Content Management System (CMS) records and producer interviews, and its application was analyzed by categorizing it into 'custom-made' and 'generic' AI images. (Results) Out of 7,366 news graphics, 238 cases (3.23%) utilized Gen AI. The application was overwhelmingly concentrated in the descriptive type (164 cases), accounting for 68.9% of all AI usage. In stark contrast, its role in information-structuring graphics was minimal, with only 71 cases in the expository type and a mere 3 in the narrative. Furthermore, 'custom-made' AI images were utilized over three times more frequently than 'generic' ones, indicating an active production role. In narrative and expository contexts, AI was primarily used as an auxiliary tool in a mixed-discourse mode to generate descriptive visual elements such as backgrounds or illustrative motifs, rather than structuring the information itself. (Conclusions) Gen AI is establishing itself as a visualization tool in news graphic production, yet its application is significantly concentrated on descriptive functions. This trend suggests current AI technology is stronger at visually recreating difficult-to-film or abstract scenes than at structuring the logical relationships of complex data. In essence, within the news production environment, Gen AI functions more as an efficient illustrator than a comprehensive infographic designer. However, this study has limitations as it examines a single media organization over a limited period. Future research is expected to generalize these findings through multi-institutional comparative analyses. Additionally, in-depth studies on the industrial and ethical implications as well as audience perception, of AI-generated images will be actively pursued.
