Abstract

First Author. Adjunct Professor, Architecture Dept., Shingu College (Background and Purpose) With recent shifts in educational paradigms, there is a growing demand for university campuses to have learning environments that transcend static, traditional classrooms and accommodate diverse, flexible, and open modes of learning. In response, student hub spaces that integrate learning, community, and welfare functions are increasingly being recognized as new core facilities on university campuses. These spaces are no longer mere extensions of traditional learning environments but have evolved into complex spatial platforms that reflect the educational philosophy of universities and promote learner-centered culture. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial characteristics and recent transformations of student hub spaces within the broader context of changing campus environments, focusing on key thematic keywords. By applying text mining and network analysis techniques to textual data related to the spatial concepts and design strategies of major international student hubs, this study seeks to complement traditional qualitative case analyses and quantitatively explore the evolving spatial features of these environments. (Method) Data on student hub spaces were collected from global university cases published in the architectural web magazine, ArchDaily. A total of 81 cases were selected from 2005 to 2024 using the keywords “student hub” and “student center.” The cases were divided into two periods for comparative analysis: early (2005-2014) and recent (2015-2024). Textual data were preprocessed and analyzed using the text-mining tool, Textom. This study employed various analytical methods, including word frequency analysis, TF-IDF, N-gram analysis, degree centrality, and CONCOR analysis. (Results) First, student hub spaces have shifted from function-oriented physical spaces (hardware perspective) to experience-centered emotional spaces (software perspective). Second, there has been a transition from operator-led functional integration to user-centered community-based spatial models. Third, these spaces have expanded from serving specific functions to supporting multifunctional and polysemantic applications. Fourth, the network analysis revealed an increasing complexity of semantic structures within these environments. Finally, the CONCOR analysis demonstrated that spatial organization has evolved from segmented functional arrangements to integrated, lifestyle-based configurations. (Conclusions) This study quantitatively demonstrates that student hub spaces are evolving from fixed function-based facilities to flexible layered environments that support user experience and community engagement. These changes suggest that campus spaces are being redefined as experiential places that embody emotional and social values, rather than serving only functional needs. Consequently, future campus design strategies should emphasize user interaction and emotional resonance. This study offers theoretical and practical foundations for user-centered planning and the design of future campus environments by quantitatively examining these trends.
