Abstract
(Background and Purpose) This study analyzes how AI-based image generation tools such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion have been applied in public architectural design practices, and explores how these tools can be further expanded into architectural design education. In recent years, public institutions have increasingly required design proposals to be developed within a short timeframe—typically between 30 to 90 days—based on clear and specific programmatic and spatial requirements. Within this compressed schedule, architects are expected to develop concepts, visualize ideas, explore alternatives, and deliver persuasive presentations. Under such conditions, traditional design methods often prove insufficient. Particularly in processes involving contextual facade design or the evaluation of public value, rapid simulations and iterative comparisons are necessary. In this context, AI tools have emerged as viable strategies to meet such demands within a limited time frame. (Method) Based on this awareness, the study analyzes the design processes of two public competition entries: the Daegu Jung-gu Senior Club Project and the Yeoju “Yeo(ju) Haeng(bok)” Station Project. Midjourney was used to generate emotionally rich images, helping define spatial atmospheres and differentiate programmatic elements. Meanwhile, Stable Diffusion, particularly through the AUTOMATIC1111 interface, contributed to the development of facade strategies and urban contextual responses through material and lighting experiments. The workflow—from prompt creation and image selection to architectural interpretation and drafting—redefined the architect’s role from a visual presenter to a “conceptual curator.” This shift allowed the design process to move from a linear sequence to a fluid and generative structure. In doing so, the architect acting as an interpreter and mediator who translated visual outcomes into architectural ideas. (Results) In addition to analyzing real-world cases, this study highlights the pedagogical potential of AI tools in design education. In lower-year studios, these tools support the development of architectural vocabulary and spatial imagination, while in upper-year courses, they enable programmatic experimentation and design iteration. Integrating professional experience into educational projects allows students to engage with the full cycle of concept generation, visualization, and drafting, while also cultivating critical thinking in the use of digital tools. Rather than replacing the architect’s thinking, AI tools expand imaginative and expressive possibilities, signaling a shift in the design education paradigm and offering strategies to address early-stage uncertainties through image-based speculative thinking. (Conclusions) In conclusion, this study demonstrates that AI image generation tools not only aid visualization but also promote shifts in design thinking and diversify educational approaches. They show potential as a new design methodology, fostering structural changes in practice and education. Ultimately, they contribute to enhancing public architecture, expanding intuitive thinking, and supporting learner-centered design education.
