Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The rapid advancement of Generative AI technologies has increasingly been integrated into the entire film production process, fundamentally transforming conventional modes of filmmaking. In particular, the methods of actor implementation—central to cinematic storytelling and to processes of audience immersion and identification—are undergoing profound change. Previous studies have primarily focused on the efficiency and automation brought by AI, while discussions on how the very concept of the actor is being redefined, transformed, or replaced remain relatively limited. This study therefore aims to systematically classify the modes of actor implementation using Generative AI technologies and to analyze their technical and narrative characteristics, thereby providing foundational data for future research on AI film. (Method) Through a comprehensive literature review, the study establishes the theoretical background of Generative AI film. Based on the degree of transformation of the actor enabled by AI technologies, three types were derived: the Partially Transformed Actor (PTA), the Fully Transformed Actor (FTA), and the Fully Generated Actor (FGA). Representative Korean and international AI films produced between 2019 and 2025 were selected for in-depth analysis of their technological and narrative characteristics. (Results) The analysis revealed that the PTA type modifies part of an actor's appearance while preserving their physical performance, providing narrative realism and immersion but often causing incongruities between body movements and facial expressions. The FTA type expands production efficiency and expressive scope by employing motion capture to transform an actor’s performance data into a character with a completely different appearance. The FGA type generates characters and performances solely from text and image prompts without using any actor data, demonstrating a fully datafied, algorithmic model of performance. These typological features illustrate both the multifaceted possibilities and inherent limitations of AI filmmaking, indicating that a fundamental redefinition of the actor is underway. (Conclusions) This study identifies a paradigm shift in which the concept of the actor in AI film evolves from a 'human actor' to a 'datafied performance', and ultimately to an 'algorithmic agent'. Each typological feature highlights both the expanded possibilities and inherent limitations of AI filmmaking, suggesting that a fundamental redefinition of the traditional concept of an actor is underway. The proposed typology provides a theoretical framework applicable to the systematic analysis and critique of future AI film cases, contributing to the establishment of an academic foundation for AI film studies. However, due to the rapidly changing technological environment, this study does not encompass the most recent agent-based AI actor technologies and fails to address related copyright and ethical issues. Therefore, future research should explore real-time interactive AI actors and hybrid models, thereby fostering interdisciplinary convergence across film studies, immersive media, and AI technology.
