Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The rapid advancement of Generative AI (GenAI) technology is bringing fundamental transformations to the entire live-action film production process and methods of visual narrative construction. In particular, as numerous live-action/AI hybrid films—which combine live-action footage with AI-generated visual effects—emerge, a new analytical framework for their synthesis methods and narrative expression strategies is required. Existing research has primarily focused on the general utility of AI or its automation efficiency, while systematic analysis of how films are produced and what characteristics they exhibit based on the intervention stage of AI image generation remains lacking. Therefore, this study aims to classify the synthesis types of live-action/AI hybrid films centered on the production phase of AI image generation, and to derive the technical and content-based characteristics of each type, thereby providing an analytical framework for future AI film research. (Method) This study conducted a qualitative case study of representative domestic (Korean) and international live-action/AI hybrid films released between 2019 and 2025. First, it reviewed previous research on film production technology workflows and AI synthesis tools. Based on the timing of AI generation, three types were derived: Pre-AI Generation, Real-Time AI Generation, and Post-AI Generation. Subsequently, representative cases for each type were selected to analyze their technical implementation methods and content-based characteristics. (Results) The analysis found that Pre-AI Generation type actively utilizes AI in the pre-production stage, such as for generating scenarios and visual materials, demonstrating rapid prototyping and visualization efficiency. However, it revealed limitations in narrative sophistication and emotional expression. Real-time AI Generation utilizes AI on set to generate and control real-time direction, characters, and lighting, enabling the creation of immersive scenes. However, this was accompanied by issues of complex implementation equipment and technological dependency. Post-AI Generation enhanced the film's overall production quality through AI-driven motion correction and the expansion of visual expression methods. However, excessive post-production intervention could lead to dissonance with the original narrative and raise ethical controversies regarding actor transformation. (Conclusions) This study proposes a new classification framework by categorizing live-action/AI hybrid films based on the temporal point of AI technology intervention in the production process, and provides an in-depth analysis of the production technology and content characteristics of each type. This provides an empirical analytical framework for future AI film research by offering a multi-dimensional perspective on the integration patterns of AI technology at each stage of film production. However, this study is limited by the exclusion of elements such as real-time AI agent technology and ethical identification systems due to the rapid changes in the technological landscape. Future research should address an integrated approach that encompasses audience perception, the collaborative structure between creators and algorithms, and issues of copyright and personality rights.
