Abstract
(Background and Purpose) With global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and aging populations, and accelerating technological advances, societies are facing increasingly complex and uncertain environments. In this context, scenario methodologies for future research are gaining traction as an effective tool for analyzing complex problems and proposing compelling solutions. In particular, advances in AI technology offer innovative possibilities in terms of data analysis, narrative construction, and visual representation in the process of design scenario creation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the possibilities and limitations of future design scenarios using AI and explore new processes for future public design to induce social empathy and practical change. (Method) The research was conducted through a combination of theoretical review and case analysis. The theoretical review examined future research, scenario methodology, and the possibilities of design scenarios utilizing AI. In the case analysis, we examined the process of a project in a public design class on the theme of the future city of 2050, which was divided into three stages: analysis, interpretation, and prediction, and conducted a SWOT analysis of each stage based on the results of a focus group interview (FGI) with participants. (Results) First, in the analysis phase, AI supported future scenario planning by quickly collecting and organizing research data and trend information, but was limited by lack of information reliability and data bias. Second, in the interpretation phase, AI supported multi-layered analysis of cultural, economic, and technological factors and persona-based scenario construction, but was limited by intuitive interpretation and value judgment. Third, in the forecasting phase, AI enabled rapid prototyping and simulation of various future scenarios, contributing to enhanced storytelling and visual persuasiveness. However, AI tends to present only simple possibilities with limited data learning about the future, and ethical considerations and social impact analysis were found to be a limitation. Therefore, efforts are needed to leverage the strengths of AI analyzed above, but combine them with human critical thinking and a value-driven approach to produce more reliable and balanced results. (Conclusions) In order to effectively apply AI technology to public design scenarios, it is necessary to go beyond mere instrumental applications and develop in-depth research and methodologies for AI and human collaborative creation, including building models of AI and human collaborative creation, diversifying public communication formats for AI-based design scenarios, and exploring its expanded role as a tool to explore future urban issues and promote collaboration among various stakeholders.
