Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The transformation of urban industrial structures and the broader trend of deindustrialization have resulted in the abandonment of many industrial facilities, creating not only challenges related to urban decline but also new opportunities for spatial reuse. In recent years, efforts to regenerate such disused industrial sites into multi-functional cultural complexes have increased, positioning adaptive reuse as a significant architectural and urban strategy. Within this context, glass emerges as more than a conventional material; it serves as a critical visual and symbolic element that connects temporal layers and redefines spatial boundaries. With properties such as transparency, reflectivity, and permeability, glass contributes to the construction of spatial identity while simultaneously enhancing the sensory and experiential dimensions of user interaction. This study investigates the architectural, symbolic, and experiential roles of glass in the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings, emphasizing its strategic value in contemporary design. (Method) The expressive characteristics of glass were conceptually classified into five analytical domains: psychological, philosophical, architectural, aesthetic, and symbolic. Based on this framework, the study developed detailed analytical criteria under each category to guide the investigation. These criteria were applied in a qualitative analysis of selected domestic case studies of industrial building reuse projects. The analysis focused on identifying the role and intensity of glass use, evaluating its visual impact and spatial integration across cases. Through comparative analysis, recurring expression patterns were identified and classified into design typologies, each reflecting specific spatial intentions and design strategies involving glass. (Results) The findings revealed three primary typologies of glass expression: (1) openness and flexibility-oriented, which emphasizes visual expansion, spatial fluidity, and user adaptability; (2) context and preservation-focused, which retains and exposes architectural traces while reinterpreting the temporal and cultural context of the site; and (3) emotion and nature-connected, which utilizes light, reflection, and materiality to create immersive atmospheres and harmonize spatial experience with natural elements. Each typology demonstrates a distinct approach to integrating glass, functioning both symbolically and practically within reuse design. (Conclusions) This study shows that glass functions not merely as a technical material but as a strategic architectural component capable of bridging past and present, materiality and perception. By systematically structuring glass’s expressive roles and validating them through built examples, the research provides a theoretical foundation for material-driven strategies in adaptive reuse. Furthermore, the findings offer a practical reference for future reuse design involving glass, highlighting its capacity to shape space, memory, and user experience within complex cultural environments.
