Abstract

In early 2023, AI technology became widespread, exerting a significant influence across various fields and emerging as a prominent topic of discussion. As AI technology has continued to advance, it remains a major issue in 2025, drawing considerable interest within the webtoon ecosystem, particularly in generative AI and its use as an assistive tool for webtoon creation. This study empirically analyzes the differences in cut composition strategies between webtoons with a high degree of generative AI intervention and those created by human authors, with particular focus on the use of interaction cuts to identify the limitations of AI-based directing. For this purpose, webtoon and comics works with a high level of AI intervention were selected, and their episode cuts were subjected to frequency analysis and categorized by type. A total of ten comics and webtoons were analyzed to examine whether statistically significant differences exist in cut composition tendencies depending on the degree of AI involvement. The works were ultimately divided into two groups—generative AI and human author—and cross-analysis was conducted to examine directing strategies. The statistical analysis of the two groups’ cut composition tendencies revealed that AI-driven webtoons showed a markedly higher proportion of non-interaction cuts, including solo cuts, while interaction cuts accounted for an average of only 5.9%. In contrast, webtoons created by human authors similarly featured a high proportion of solo cuts, but interaction cuts represented an average of 45.2%, demonstrating a statistically significant difference compared to AI-based webtoons. These findings suggest that, at its current level, generative AI technology faces limitations in directing complex interaction scenes, indicating that it remains insufficient in replacing human authors’ strategies for achieving visual immersion and fostering emotional empathy.
