Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Contemporary cognitive science highlights Embodied Cognition, which posits that human cognition emerges through interactions among the senses, body, objects, and surrounding environment. Similarly, affordance theory posits that environmental characteristics influence children's actions and the construction of their interpretations. Conventional Cultural and Arts Education practices predominantly emphasize static and performance-oriented activities, offering limited opportunities for bodily and sensory engagement. Concurrently, perspectives that conceptualize space as a site for the active production of meaning are garnering attention, suggesting that children embody artistic meaning through interactions with the sensory and affective qualities of space. This study examines how children's bodily, sensory, emotional, and behavioral engagements interact with spatial and material environments. These interactions are grounded in the Embodied Cognition and Affordance theories. This study derives principles for meaning-making-centered educational space designs in children's Cultural and Arts Education. (Method) This study employs a dual-pronged methodology, integrating a comprehensive review of the extant literature with meticulous case analysis. First, the theoretical literature on embodied cognition and affordance was reviewed to construct a conceptual framework. Subsequently, international case studies of children's Cultural and Arts Education spaces were analyzed, focusing on children's bodily actions, sensory modulation, affective and relational interactions, and modes of narrative or trace formation. Based on these analyses, a three-axis spatial model was developed. This model comprises of three axes: Movement, Sensory Interaction, and Narrative–Relational Experience. (Results) The findings indicated that children's artistic meaning-making occurs through an embodied, cyclical process in which bodily exploration, sensory modulation, and affective–relational narrative formation are interwoven. Accordingly, this study proposes three spatial models: (1) space-supporting movements, (2) spaces supporting sensory-interactive engagement, and (3) Relational Narrative Environments. Each model encompasses structural affordances that activate bodily movement, coherent sensory stimuli that guide emotional and attentional states, and narrative–relational structures that enable co-creation, reflection, and memory formation. The study revealed that educational spaces function not merely as functional zones but as ecological environments in which children's experiences are enacted, recorded, and expanded. (Conclusions) This study reconceptualizes children's Cultural and Arts Education spaces as dynamic fields in which the body, senses, relationships, and narratives are co-produced. It presents conceptual and practical principles for Meaning-Making-centered Educational Space Design, shifting the paradigm from‘providing activities’to‘supporting experiential meaning production.’Subsequent research should validate and extend the proposed spatial model by examining user responses in real-world environments, developmental differences in embodied experiences, and possibilities for integrating interactive technologies.
