Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Following the implementation of China's Rural Revitalization Strategy in 2017, the paradigm of rural development has undergone a transition, with the emphasis shifting from the enhancement of physical infrastructure to the promotion of cultural vitality. Rural public cultural spaces, as pivotal agents of cultural revitalization, frequently encounter the predicament of "construction without vitality." This challenge arises when substantial investments in facilities prove ineffective in generating enduring social or cultural dynamism. To address this issue, this study aims to clarify the underlying logic and activation pathways through which vitality emerges in rural public cultural spaces. Utilizing qualitative methodologies, the present study aims to further refine a Catalyst Circulation Model, thereby offering a theoretical framework for sustaining vitality in rural environments. (Method) This study adopts grounded theory and selects the People's Book House in Chenjiapu Village, Songyang County, Zhejiang Province, as a representative a case study. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with a diverse array of stakeholders, including designers, local residents, visitors, scholars, and civil servants. This endeavor yielded approximately 30,000 characters of original qualitative material. In accordance with the established procedures of grounded theory, the analytical process proceeded was conducted through three systematic stages: initial concepts were extracted preliminary categories were established through open coding; logical relationships among categories were identified through axial coding; and major thematic dimensions were constructed through selective coding. To ensure methodological rigor, theoretical saturation was tested through repeated comparison and verification. Ultimately, this process supported the development of the Catalyst Circulation Model, which serves as the study's central analytical outcome. (Results) The study produces three key findings. First, the vitality of rural public cultural spaces unfolds through a three-stage cyclical pathway—catalyst insertion, catalyst activation, and value derivation—which together generate a self-reinforcing system sustained by continuous value feedback loops. Second, the analysis reveals three core dimensions structuring this cycle: resources and positioning (providing the foundational value inputs), space and place (achieving meaningful place-based transformation), and value and feedback (maintaining systemic circulation and iterative growth). Third, the study identifies three fundamental logics underlying rural spatial vitality: (1) sustainability relies on the strength and consistency of value feedback; (2) effectiveness depends on the operational capacity and stability of the circulation process; and (3) long-term vitality requires an adaptive balance between cultural authenticity and functional modernity, thereby allowing the space to evolve in accordance with the needs of the community. (Conclusions) The Catalyst Circulation Model demonstrates a shift from merely 'constructing physical spaces' to actively 'cultivating spatial vitality.' Furthermore, it offers stage-specific strategic guidance for rural areas at varying stages development. The model provides a foundation for theoretical insights for improving the design and governance of rural public cultural spaces. Additionally, it offers practical pathways to support the ongoing implementation of China's Rural Revitalization Strategy.
