Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Contemporary urban environments and digitally oriented lifestyles have diminished the density of sensory experience and intensified the homogenization of temporal perception. In response, this study focuses on‘Immersive Temporality’, a form of experiential time constructed through the interaction of senses, space, and temporal flow. Immersive temporality, defined as a subtype of relational temporality, consists of sensory immersion, spatial absorption, and non-linear flow. The purpose of this study is to translate this concept into the language of form and to examine how biomimetic form-making—grounded in natural principles of rhythm, growth, and pattern—can generate sensory immersion and reconfigure users’temporal experience. (Method) Through literature review, the study identifies the structural and perceptual characteristics of immersive temporality and analyzes their correspondence with biomimetic form. Based on this analysis, four design strategies—rhythmic structuring, organic growth morphology, sensory-integrative configuration, and environmental responsiveness—are derived. These strategies are organized through a dual analytical framework: Framework A (biomimetic formal strategies) and Framework B (elements of immersive temporality). The applicability of these strategies is then examined through domestic and international installation cases, analyzed in terms of temporal-formal and temporal-experiential approaches. (Results) The findings indicate that biomimetic form translates natural patterns of repetition, variation, and growth into structural configurations that embody temporal continuity, while simultaneously extending time perception into experiential and event-based dimensions through sensory change and environmental feedback. The four strategies demonstrate clear correspondences with sensory immersion, spatial absorption, and non-linear flow, elucidating the operational mechanism through which immersive temporality is constructed across both formal and experiential layers. This reveals that temporal experience emerges not solely from psychological perception but from the interaction of form, sensory structure, and environmental dynamics. (Conclusions) The study proposes that biomimetic form-making functions not merely as a method of representing nature but as a generative methodology for constructing and transforming temporal experience. Immersive temporality arises through the interplay of sensory input, environmental conditions, and formal structure, and biomimetic strategies offer a practical framework for its implementation. By understanding time as a formative process produced through sensory–environmental–material interaction, the study positions biomimetic form as an operative medium for facilitating new forms of temporal experience.
