평면을 기반으로 오픈플랜 구조를 Type A(전면 오픈형)·B(부분 오픈형)·C(선택적 오픈형)으로 분류한 뒤, DepthmapX v0.8.0을 활용한 VGA로 Connectivity(연결도)·Integration(통합도)을 산출하였다.

Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Recent public libraries have moved away from segmented configurations of closed reading rooms and stack areas, expanding toward open-plan layouts that integrate shelving and reading spaces within a single large volume. This shift goes beyond mere planar openness, evolving into strategies that enhance visual continuity and spatial diversity. In particular, Japan has advanced this trend by adjusting bookshelf heights and adopting dispersed, open arrangements that prioritize the flow of sightlines. This study focuses on how open-plan spaces function through their underlying visual-perceptual structures, quantitatively analyzing the visual configuration and layout strategies of open-plan libraries and presenting implications for the spatial planning of Korean public libraries. (Method) The study selected representative Japanese public libraries completed after 2015 with a floor area of at least 2,500 m², supplemented by additional cases under similar conditions. Based on architectural floor plans, the reading areas were classified into three spatial types: Type A (fully open), Type B (partially open), and Type C (selectively open). Using DepthmapX v0.8.0, Visual Graph Analysis (VGA) was conducted to calculate Connectivity and Integration values. To reflect varying degrees of visual obstruction, two visibility levels were applied: Level 1 (≥1,800 mm, structural barriers) and Level 2 (1,500–1,800 mm, furniture barriers). To account for scale effects between buildings of different sizes, all values were normalized by floor area for comparison. (Results) At Level 1, Type A demonstrated the highest degree of openness and visual centrality, forming a widely connected visual field across the main reading space. Type B showed partial discontinuities around cores or voids, generating areas of concentrated centrality. Type C, characterized by more subdivided structures, exhibited limited visual dispersion and low inter-space connectivity. At Level 2, connectivity and integration declined in all types, following the pattern A > B > C. Moreover, the degree of decline differed by type: more open types (A and B) showed larger decreases, indicating that furniture placement has a stronger impact on visual continuity and spatial centrality in structurally open environments. Conversely, in already enclosed types, the decrease was comparatively small, suggesting that shelving height has a limited influence when structural barriers already restrict visibility. (Conclusions) The study demonstrates that open-plan public libraries cannot be treated as a single spatial category; rather, their visual-perceptual structures differ substantially depending on the interaction between structural openness and visual obstructions. The results also confirm that shelving height, orientation, and spacing significantly influence sightline flow and the distribution of spatial centrality. By quantitatively comparing how visual structure changes across types and visibility levels, this research provides a systematic framework for understanding open-plan reading spaces. These findings can serve as foundational data for developing perception-based design strategies in future public library planning.
