Abstract

Police face many situations at the heart of civil society. However, the education of the leaders who lead the situation in the field is not properly performed. For this reason, the ‘Korean National Police University Leadership Center’ was established in May 2018 to conduct systematic police leadership research and field-based training. The purpose of this study was to explore the direction of research and education of the Korean National Police University Leadership Center and to suggest a developmental direction for the study of police leadership. For research purposes, 109 of 289 degrees and academic papers searched under keywords for ‘police’ and ‘leadership’ were selected and general characteristics analyzed. Next, internal characteristics such as leadership theory, research subjects, and research methods were analyzed for 94 books that excluded duplicate texts. The major findings are as follows. First, police leadership research tended to be similar to general leadership research, and there has been an increase in academic papers approaching police leadership from an administrative and policy perspective. No research has been approached from a leadership perspective, and a number of studies have been conducted in a single fashion. Second, the study of police leadership was focused on the one-to-one relationship according to the integrated approach. Third, the research target was focused on the impact on the performance of the leadership of the mid-level or top-level managers on the overall performance of police officers and police affairs. Fourth, the research method was concentrated on quantitative research. Based on the research results, the research and education directions of the “Korean National Police University Leadership Center” were suggested as follows. First, basic research on the definition and concept of police leadership should precede. Second, qualitative and longitudinal research that reflects the police officer’s perceptions and experiences on leadership is necessary. Third, research on competency models for police leadership education and the development of education programs based on field cases are necessary.
