Abstract

This study aims to examine juvenile victmization in the new theoretical framework. Specifically, building on Hirschi’s redefined self-control theory, we investigate whether redefined self-control can influence juvenile victimization and its impact is stronger for victimization than those for personality trait based self-control. A logistic regression model was used with the data drawn from Korean Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). The results indicate that each redefined self-control variables differentially affected the victimization. Specifically, parental supervision, one of inhibitors, reduces the probability of victimization experience. However, the effect of school bond on the victimization is positive. Perceived costs also have positive effect on the victimization against the expectation. Personality trait self-control remained significant after controlling redefined self-control. This result implies that the policy implication for adolescent victimization should be taken into account with redefined self-control as well as personality trait self-control.
