Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, 42, 143~172. This study is designed for successful oral presentations for foreign students studying at korean universities. One of the successful factors in the discourse of the presentation is a relationship between speaker and listener. The deferential style of Korean language is an important factor in determining the relationship. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze which of Hapsyo and Haeyo styles native Korean speakers and foreign Korean learners choose. In addition, the paper tries to examine the context in which Korean language users employ Hapsyo and Haeyo style. For this study, I analyzed the oral presentations of 5 Korean undergraduate students and 5 advanced Korean learners during a semester. The results were as follows: the native Korean speakers, one the one hand, selected either Hapsyo style or Haeyo style based on the characteristics of the contents of the discourse (main ideas, additional information, objective information, subjective information, etc.), the characteristics of the representation of the discourse (discourse markers, etc.), speaker's characteristics (gender, proficiency, etc.), and the relationship between the speaker and the listener (information status, listener's burden, etc.). On the other hand, foreign students were affected by simple factors such as conversational turn-taking. The results of this study will provide the instructor with standards of judgment to assess the fluency in korean speaking, and help Korean learners not only to understand the context of the discourse but also to utilize it for their own presentations.
