환경 역량강화를 위한 환경 교양교육의 새로운 모색: 동국대학교의 사례를 중심으로

이 글은 환경 교양교육의 새로운 방향과 과제를 다루고 있다. 환경문제를 해결하는데 있어서 시민의 관여는 핵심적이지만 우리의 현실은 그렇지 못하다. 그래서 시민교육이 강조될 필요가 있는데, 환경 교양교육은 그 일환으로 그 가치가 매우 높다고 볼 수 있다. 이 글에서는 동국대학교의 교양교과목인 <지구, 환경, 공생>의 사례분석을 토대로 환경 교양교육의 새로운 방향을 모색하고, 핵심 과제를 탐색하고 있다. 이를 위한 이론적 개념으로 ‘환경 역량강화’ 및 ‘시민과학’을 제시하고 있다. 특히, 시민과학은 생태학 분야에서 크게 발전하고 있으며 환경문제 해결에도 적지 않은 기여를 하고 있는데, 이 글에서는 <지구, 환경, 공생>을 진행하는 과정의 경험을 바탕으로 시민과학 프로그램과 환경 교양교육을 현실적으로 접목할 수 있는 방안에 대한 시론적 접근을 시도하고 있다.
Abstract
This essay aims to look at the new direction and possibilities of environmental general education. Even though citizen engagement is regarded as having a key role in solving environmental problems, it is evaluated to be unsatisfactory in our case. In turn, we need good programs for civil education of environment, and, as part of those, environmental general education can be given as a good option. Based on the case study of <Earth, environment, symbiosis>, the couse of general education in Dongguk Univ., I try to search for the new direction of environmental general education, and explore what we have to do for good environmental general education. For this purpose, I suggest two key concepts: ‘environmental empowerment’ and ‘citizen science’. Especially, I want to focus on ‘citizen science’, because large parts of citizen science programs include in ecological research area and have a potential to be good tools for solving environmental problems. Based on my experience on running the course of <Earth, environment, symbiosis> and case studies on that course, I try to suggest some factors for reconstructing the environmental general education by interconnecting between citizen science programs and the courses of general education for environment in colleges.
