Abstract
This study approaches Ethan From by Edith Wharton which includes many tragic elements with the subject of isolation. It considers isolation to be a primary cause of the protagonist’s tragic fate. This paper analyzes the tragic elements of isolation into two sections; one is Ethan's external environmental elements and the other is internal character flaws. In the former, isolation is related to the geographic location whose setting is desolate Starkfield, Massachusetts. It negatively affects mental health on the people living there and the treatment costs a considerable amount of money. As a result, this situation is required for Ehan to labor constantly and causes his isolation from the community. One more external element is Puritan morality overflowing in the society which takes it for granted that Ethan has to sacrifice his life for taking care of Zeena. The internal elements of isolation should be Ethan’s character flaws. He is indecisive as well as passive and respects his honor as a moral Puritan. This study has a scholarly meaning in terms of integrating tragic elements of Ethan From through the specific subject, isolation.
