Abstract

The most sensitive element in the evaluation of the 20th century French writer Jean Giono(1895-1970), well known as the "natural admirer," is the charge of "literary collaboration." In this paper, my interest does not lie in arguing whether Giono is a collaborative writer or not. I would like to note why Giono's writings have attracted special attention from the Nazi government, the Vichy government, and the German occupiers. I believe that the reason is that there is a certain affinity between the ideas of Giono and the ideas of the Nazi or the Vichy government. The core of its affinity is criticism of modern civilization characterized by mechanical civilization and capitalism and admiration for nature and rural communities. Giono's criticism of capitalism and mechanical civilization is the result of his anti-war ideas and pacifism from the early days of the formation of his ideology. Capitalism and mechanical civilization eventually led to war, so he advocated a romantic and reactionary "return to the land" and the restoration of rural communities. The Nazi and Vichy governments, which criticized rural civilization and criticized machine civilization and capitalism, were forced to revise their initial policies. This is because mechanical civilization and capital are desperately needed to wage a fierce war. In the end, the Nazi or Vichy gave up the praise of the early rural civilization and, instead of going on the path of pacifism that Giono pursued, gave up the path of ecology originally pursued and proceeded to the path of mechanical civilization. This is the fork that separates Giono from Nazi or Vichy government. Giono's criticism of modern civilization represented by machinery and capital and praising the nature and rural communities is a reflection of Giono's consistent ideology. He ultimately hoped that a new civilization would not go on the path of war but on the path of peace.
