Abstract
Woo, Hyeong-Shik, 2009. The grammar as rules and the grammar as uses. Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, 34, 227~256. In the theoretical linguistics, most researches accept the idea that the grammar consists of principles and rules that are innate in the language. In the grammar for education, this view of point is adapted to teaching of language. But it is important to restructure the theoretical grammar according to many variants that is necessary for application in educational situations. So the grammar can help learners to form the language expressions correctly, and to use them appropriately for the contexts of communication. We can consider the two types of grammar in teaching of language. One is the grammar as language competence(principle and rule), the other is the grammar as language performance(usage and use). It is evident that both types of grammar play very valuable roles for language learning each other. Knowing a language means that learners have knowledge of language competence and performance. So we have to consider the nature of relationship between them for description of the Korean grammar for education, in order to apply the grammar to the variant educational situations.
